Swiss architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron have been named the 2001 Pritzker Architecture Prize Laureates. The two men, both born in Basel in 1950, formed their partnership, Herzog & de Meuron, in 1978. Since then, the firm has realized striking and original residential, commercial, and institutional work around the globe. Renowned for their artistry and imagination, the duo has won international praise for numerous recent projects, including the conversion of a London power plant into the Tate Museum's Gallery of Modern Art. "Herzog and de Meuron refine the traditions of modernism to elemental simplicity, while transforming materials and surfaces through the exploration of new treatments and techniques," said architecture critic and Pritzker Prize juror Ada Louise Huxtable. The firm is currently at work on Prada's New York headquarters and the de Young Museum in San Francisco.
