Winners Announced For Sixth Annual National Design Awards
The awards were first launched in 2000 by the White House Millennium Council.

Eleven individuals and companies were honored last week in a gala for the Sixth Annual National Design Awards, sponsored by New York’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum. The awards, recognizing contribution to design, carry international prestige. This year’s winners are below.
Lifetime Achievement Award Winner: Eva Zeisel.
Corporate Achievement Award Winner: Patagonia.
Design Mind Award Winners: Katherine and Michael McCoy.
Special Jury Commendation: Sergio A. Palleroni.
Communications Design: Stefan Sagmeister.
Architecture Design: Diller Scofidio + Renfro.
Landscape Design: Ned Kahn.
Product Design: Burt Rutan.
Interior Design: Richard Gluckman.
Fashion Design: Toledo Studio.
Design Patron: Mayor Richard M. Daley.
Winners were selected by a jury of nine, including architect and designer Ron Arad, David Rockwell, founder of New York-based Rockwell Group, Michael Vanderbyl, of his namesake design firm in San Francisco, and Michael Volkema, chairman of the board of furniture manufacturer Herman Miller.
The event, first launched at the White House in 2000 as an official project of the White House Millennium Council, benefits the museum, its exhibitions and public programs. The Cooper-Hewitt holdings are widely recognized as one of the most diverse and comprehensive collections of design works in existence, tracing the history of design through more than 250,000 objects spanning 23 centuries, from the Han Dynasty (200 B.C.) to the present day.
