Richard Meier Lands Arts Gold Medal

An awards ceremony will be held in New York May 21.

Richard Meier has captured one of the most exclusive prizes for the arts. Honor society the American Academy of Arts and Letters has named the Pritzker Prize-winning architect the recipient of its 2008 Gold Medal.

Awarded only once every six years, the Gold Medal is a nod to an architect's entire body of work. Meier will join a list of past honorees including Philip Johnson, Louis Kahn, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, and Frank Lloyd Wright.

"The American Academy of Arts and Letters is a unique institution, for like architecture it connects the present with the past," says Meier. "It is a great honor for me to be recognized by its members, superb artists all."

An awards ceremony including the society's annual induction and an exhibition of work by its members will be held May 21.

The American Academy of Arts and Letters was founded in 1898 and is composed of 250 architects, composers, artists, and writers.
