National Pride

edited by Sheila Kim -- Interior Design, 8/1/2002 12:00:00 AM

Steven Holl, Maira Kalman, Ayse Birsel, Niels Diffrient, and eight other visionaries have been named finalists for the 2002 National Design Awards. The announcement was made at a White House reception hosted by First Lady Laura Bush, and the event also honored the recipients of the Lifetime Achievement, Corporate Achievement, and American Original awards: landscape architect Dan Kiley, Whirlpool Corporation, and fashion designer Geoffrey Beene, respectively. Winners in the categories of architecture, communications design, environment design, and product design will be announced October 22 at a benefit dinner at Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, in New York.
