The pierced ceramic cube of designer Flavia Alvez de Souza's Cut lamp creates a soft glow from the incandescent light source within. David Weeks

For his new Torroja series, this designer looked to the work of Eduardo Torroja, the mid-20th-century Spanish architect and engineer. The collection's incandescent Number 309 floor lamps, sconces, and chandeliers feature powdercoated-aluminum canister reflectors—in brown, orange, white, or yellow—on arms and bases of nickel-plated steel. JJI Lighting

Alkco's Tabbi surface-mounted lights are a good way to brighten up dark nooks and crannies, or simply to add a minimalist accent. These slender, sleek luminaires use 11- or 13-watt fluorescents in an extruded-aluminum housing with rotating light shields. Lucifer

With a discreet, 2-inch-square aperture, the halogen or metal-halide Mirage Square wall-washer downlight creates a floor-to-ceiling field of light. The Olinda collection takes a new view on chandeliers. This designer has created a sophisti-cated and moody effect using a humble light source. This spirited designer has transformed Oriental bittersweet vines into stems for her Daphne table and floor lamps. Influenced by the French designer Jean Prouvé, Palmer Hargrave's Cabot Swing Arm is an elegantly utilitarian plug-in sconce with a brass shade and hinged arm. The Mouette suspension luminaire looks like it could fly.
