Update

Catch these events in February and March

edited by Jen DeRose -- Interior Design, 1/1/2006 12:00:00 AM

  1. "William Wegman: Funney/Strange," the photographer's first retrospective since 1992, explores 40 years of puppy love through paintings, drawings, collages, videos, and Polaroids such as his 1994 Connector. Organized by the Addison Gallery of American Art at Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, the show debuts at the Brooklyn Museum in New York, Wegman and his Weimaraners'hometown. March 10–May 28; 718-638-5000; brooklynmuseum.org.

  2. During posts first at Arianna, then at Vanity, the avant-garde fashion magazine she ran in the early 1980's, and finally at Italian Vogue, where she's still a contributor today, this Milanese native established herself as an international arbiter of taste. "Anna Piaggi Fashion-ology," at London's Victoria and Albert Museum, reveals her working style via storyboards, Polaroids, and faxes and her legend through her vintage couture collections, Karl Lagerfeld drawings, and photographs. The British Another Magazine published this 2003 David Bailey portrait of her—dressed by Jean-Charles de Castelbajac. February 2–April 23; 44-20-7942-2000; vam.ac.uk.

  3. Chocolate is his medium of choice—with peanut butter, dirt, diamonds, and fake blood close behind. His 1999 C-print Mona Lisa (Peanut Butter and Jelly), appearing in "Vik Muniz: Reflex," is based on Andy Warhol's 1963 serigraph print of Leonardo da Vinci's masterpiece. During the show's opening week at the Miami Art Museum, Muniz plans to photograph its future site at Bicentennial Park—with a cumulous cloud, drawn by a plane, in the sky above. February 10–May 28; 305-375-3000; miamiartmuseum.org.

  4. In "Perspectives 151: Dan Steinhilber" at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, the artist takes a jab at modern-day consumption with a sculpture of 300 plastic forks piercing 60 Styrofoam plates. Other waste products, such as clothes hangers and take-out containers, compose the exhibit's five additional large-scale works and a site-specific installation. March 31–June 4; 713-284-8250; camh.org.

  5. One of the more prolific abstract expressionists would have celebrated a very important birthday this year. To mark the occasion, New York's Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum is presenting 120 drawings and sculptures in "David Smith: A Centennial," which features his 1936 painted-iron Aerial Construction. The Guggenheim hosted Smith's last retrospective in 1969, four years after his death. February 3–May 14; 212-423-3500; guggenheim.org.
