On October 20, Parsons The New School for Design will offer an exclusive opportunity to hear Paolo Soleri. The architect and designer is this year’s recipient of the Lifetime Achievement National Design Award from the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum.
Italian-born Soleri, who studied with internationally renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright at Taliesin West, will discuss his work. Among his achievements is the development of arcology, a concept used to battle urban sprawl, or the ecological and social concerns raised by urban environments. Arcology encourages compact, dense multi-use structures for human habitat that rise three dimensionally. In 1970, Soleri began developing a prototype for his arcology concept, calling it Arcosanti. The
experimental town, an ongoing project in the Arizona desert, has been built by volunteer and workshop labor over the past 30 years.
The free event, open to the public, will be held at 8pm in the The New School’s Swayduck Auditorium, located at 65 Fifth Avenue.
We would love your feedback!
