The Chanel Mobile Art Pavilion may have shut its doors in the U.S. yesterday night, but Zaha Hadid fans can still enjoy her organic, larger-than-life designs in a two-gallery exhibition at New York’s Sonnabend and 10th Avenue space in Chelsea.
Curated by Kenny Schachter/ROVE, the display aims to shed a new light on the relationship between art and architecture. It features Hadid’s architectural designs in a series of large-scale models and installations housed within a gallery setting in an attempt to mask their utilitarian origins and present them as sculpture.

This show reflects Hadid’s vision of a new 21st-century urbanism; part of a revolutionary body of works based on organic systems of organization. One highlight is a life-sized model of the architect’s vision for the Asian side of Istanbul, the Kartal Pendik Masterplan. The scheme, which originated as an urban community comprising a decrescendo of building height from the city center to the shore, is inverted to create a grotto of forms that defy gravity and morph from the ceiling.
Other elements included in the “Architecture Art” hybrid exhibition are Hadid’s conceptual furniture designs, unrefined sculptures, and paintings on canvas. The showcase runs through December 13 at both locations.
