Trieste Contemporanea Announces Competition Theme

International design contest promotes original, functional blown-glass tableware.

Peter Halsey Sherwood -- Interior Design, 3/1/2004 12:00:00 AM

Trieste Contemporanea, an international design contest, invites entries to its upcoming glass-themed competition. The topic for this year’s biennial event is functional blown-glass tabletop items. Designers from 21 central-eastern European countries can submit original designs to be considered.

Candidates are asked to submit a project for any type of functional tabletop item that can be executed using the blown-glass technique. The objective is to use methods specific to the traditional Muranese glassware industry, famous for its delicate beauty and proximity to the markets of Venice.

For his or her supreme glassblowing efforts, the winning designer will be awarded a prize of 3,000 euros and will also be invited to Murano, Italy to assist in the execution of the prototype. The youngest designer among the selected entries will also go home 1,000 euros richer.

The contest is organized by the Trieste Contemporanea Committee, based in Trieste, Italy, under the patronage of the Central European Initiative. Enrollment is free of charge. The deadline for applications and projects is May 15, 2004. E-mail tscont@tin.it for more information.
