This year's International Contemporary Furniture Fair, held at New York City's Jacob Javits Center, attracted manufacturers and designers from around the world. On hand were some of the more established players as well as the up-and-coming crowd, with the party scene rivaling even the most seasoned Milan celebration.

Design Expansion

As the Tribeca design collective Dune continues to grow, company founder Richard Shemtov and design director Nick Dine have created a new 10,000-sq.-ft. retail space with 16-ft. ceilings and 11-ft.-high windows to show off the latest 15-piece collection. The line includes products from Dune design alumni Harry Allen (Ferguson, a sectional), Michael Solis (an aluminum-framed chair called Trudy), and Nick Dine (Ravioli lounge seating), as well as new work from Jens Denecke (Bruns table). The Future of Leather is Certain

Cortina Leather has launched a series of four new introductions. Included in the group is Futura, a milled patent leather for upholstery. This lightly textured, ultra-high sheen patent leather is available in half hides averaging 25 sq. ft. and weighs in at 3.5 ounces per sq. ft. with a 1.3-mm thickness. Laser Cavallo, a line of Italian horse-hair leather, expands the company's collection of silk-screened prints featuring zebra, jaguar, and leopard patterns. An extension of the Campania collection, Embossed Rustico offers six patterns, all of which are available with metallic hand-tipping. Finally, Interwoven adds five new styles incorporating metallic leather as well as suede and complements the existing line of six standard wovens in varying patterns and colors. Observational Art

Emmett Kerrigan, represented in Chicago by Morlen Sinoway, has introduced a new series of tile paintings that are birdseye landscape views. In particular, the series represents farmland as seen from the window of an airplane, organizing tapestries from the rows and plots of land. "I opened myself up to the sense one is greeted with on the open road somewhere in America," says Kerrigan. "My work reflects in its grand scale the awe felt when one finds oneself faced with such a place." Taking Shape

New from Carnegie, Xorel Surfaces is created by thermofusing PETG, a polyester resin, with Xorel. The end result—a tactile, hard surface that is durable, cleanable, and environmentally sound with no chlorine content or plasticizers. It combines the colors, patterns, and textures of a woven textile with the strength and flexibility of a rigid material. Depending on the pattern, the material can be translucent or opaque and the surface can be embossed or textured. It can be drilled, cut, bent, tapped into, and heat draped. Xorel Surfaces can be produced with any of the 500+ existing Xorel patterns and colors. Shatter proof and impact resistant, Xorel Surfaces is available in six gauges for a variety of applications from tabletops to freestanding screens, panels, and walls.

Note: Carnegie is hosting a Xorel design competition open to professional designers and design students. Carnegie will be providing entrants with three yards of Xorel in any standard color. Entries can range from artistic to practical and will be judged on their beauty, creativity, and originality. One winner will have their vision used in an upcoming Xorel advertisement and selected entrants will have their designs on display at Carnegie's Chicago and New York showrooms.
