Growth continues for New York's New Museum, the only museum dedicated to contemporary art in Manhattan. The museum has purchased 231 Bowery, a six-story, 47,000-square-foot building adjacent to its new facility, which is less than a year old.
Designed by Tokyo-based architecture firm SANAA, the 235 Bowery location for the New Museum opened in December 2007 to much fanfare. The new building offers twice as much exhibition space as its former SoHo location.
Although the purchase of 231 Bowery is part of an ongoing expansion effort, the museum has no official plan for the space. It will be used for storage and additional offices until a long-term strategy is developed.
"For the New Museum, the acquisition of 231 Bowery is both a wise investment in our own future and a guarantee that we will be able to play an active role in preserving the distinctive character of our neighborhood by controlling development in the immediate vicinity," says Saul Dennison, president of the museum's board of trustees.
The New Museum was founded in 1977.
