Northwest Designers Get Their Due

Entries were judged based on problem solving, creativity, quality of design, and beauty of the space.

On September 28, the top interior designers in the Northwest gathered at the Seattle Design Center. The occasion? The eighth annual Northwest Design Awards Gala.

Recognizing interior design professionals whose work has made a significant contribution to the design industry, awards were presented in 16 categories: Kitchen, bathroom, living room, dining room, bedroom, whole house (less than $200,000), whole house (more than $200,000), remodel, best of traditional design, best of contemporary design, hospitality, retail, commercial, outdoor living space, environmentally responsible design, and student design. Judges made their selections based on problem solving, creativity, quality of design, and beauty of the space.

This year's projects were driven by the broad theme "spaces that embrace."

Winners include Patricia Gray, who took top honors in the Best of Contemporary Design category. Gray's challenge? A very tall order. To meet the needs of a 6-foot, 7-inch client—with an 8-foot ceiling—Gray maximized space with an open floor plan and full-height, sandblasted, backlit glass sliding doors.

In the Kitchen category, the prize went to Sienna Architecture Company's Jeff Lamb. With multiple indirect illumination points throughout the space, Lamb designed a culinary retreat that doubles as a club or lounge-like party space.
