Best of Year Winner, Retail: FASHION: Gabellini Sheppard Associates: Vera Wang Boutique, Soho, New York, NY

When she said "I do" to Interior Design Hall of Fame member Michael Gabellini and partner Kimberly Sheppard, Vera Wang wasn't actually talking about wedding dresses—the New York shop in question was for her ready-to-wear. The flexible white box encompasses 2,200 square feet, and nothing is built in. Panels slide into different positions; mannequins are suspended from cables attached to recessed tracks in the ceiling. "It's like a theater rig for hanging props and scrims," Gabellini says. It's dramatic, too. Concealed fluorescents lend a white glow to the full-width Corian staircase joining the site's two levels: a front portion with a 23-foot ceiling and a smaller rear with the ceiling at 8 feet. Along the stairway, acrylic fixtures show bags and shoes. Other display platforms are wrapped in black neoprene, the same synthetic rubber Wang used for last season's A-line dresses.

Gensler: Christian Dior Temporary Store, New York, NY

Filling in while Gensler and Peter Marino Architect renovated the city's permanent Dior boutique, this temporary space featured witty illustrations by artist Ann Field, screen-printed onto the wall covering.

Marmol Radziner: James Perse Store, Malibu, CA

Now that a functioning lumberyard has become the eco-retail Malibu Lumber Yard, this shop pays tribute to wood via stained-cedar siding, reclaimed teak flooring, and a ceiling of Douglas fir.

MR Architecture + Decor: Atelier, New York, NY

Arched windows, concrete flooring, blackened-steel clothing racks, and serious conceptual art define this moody menswear boutique in a century-old printing house.
